TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) is a noninvasive treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. At Collaborative Solutions in Psychiatry, we use the NeuroStar TMS system, which is FDA-approved for depression and other conditions.

NeuroStar delivers targeted magnetic pulses to specific areas of the brain known to be underactive in depression and or OCD. These pulses help restore healthy brain activity over a series of TMS treatments.

NeuroStar TMS is FDA-approved for major depressive disorder, anxious depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Yes, most insurance plans cover TMS treatments for depression when clinical criteria are met. Our billing team at Collaborative Solutions in Psychiatry will help verify your benefits before treatment begins.

Insurance coverage does not mean treatment is free. Your out-of-pocket responsibility depends on your plan’s deductible, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket maximum at the time of treatment.

At Collaborative Solutions in Psychiatry, TMS treatments are generally scheduled in a 30 minute appointment. A standard NeuroStar TMS session lasts about 20 minutes. Depending on the individual treatment plan designed by our technician, your treatments may be shorter or longer. Sessions are quick and easy to fit into your daily schedule.

When treating depression, patients complete a course of 36 sessions and when treating OCD, patients complete a course of 29 sessions. Treatments are scheduled five days per week over six weeks. Insurance limits you to one treatment each day; you may not receive more than one treatment a day if your financial coverage plan involves use of insurance. Your provider will tailor your plan based on your needs.

Some patients notice symptom improvement within the first 2–3 weeks of TMS treatments, though timelines vary. Our providers monitor your progress throughout the course.

TMS feels like a tapping sensation on your scalp. Most patients find it tolerable, and our trained TMS Technicians are there to make you as comfortable as possible.

TMS is not a cure, but many patients experience remission or long-term relief from symptoms. NeuroStar TMS can reduce depression symptoms for 6–12 months or more after completing treatment.

Yes! TMS treatments are non-sedating. You can drive, return to work, and go about your usual activities immediately after each session.

The most common side effects include mild scalp sensitivity or a headache during or after treatment. These symptoms typically fade as sessions continue.

Yes. NeuroStar TMS is a non-medication treatment and does not affect the uterus or the developing baby, making it a safe option during pregnancy. Please consult with your provider for personalized guidance.

NeuroStar TMS is FDA-cleared for use in adolescents ages 15 and older with treatment-resistant depression. We have experience successfully treating teens with NeuroStar TMS at Collaborative Solutions in Psychiatry.

No. TMS is noninvasive, does not require anesthesia, and has no memory-related side effects. It’s a completely different treatment approach from ECT.

You do not need a referral to start the process. Simply contact our clinic, and team will evaluate whether TMS is right for you.

Your first visit includes a brain mapping and motor threshold determination performed by one of our physicians and TMS Technicians. In the same appointment,  you’ll receive your first treatment.

Yes! While patients chose a standard, designated daily treatment time or the general course of TMS, Our West Madison clinic offers extended hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., making it easier to schedule treatments before or after work or school. Our East Madison Clinic offers treatment times from 8:00am to 4:00pm.

Collaborative Solutions in Psychiatry offers NeuroStar TMS at both our West and East Madison locations.

The best way to find out is to schedule a consultation with one of our technicians. We’ll review your symptoms, treatment history, and goals to see if TMS is a good fit for you.

There’s no special preparation needed—just come as you are. Our TMS Technicians will walk you through everything. You’re welcome to bring a support person if that feels helpful. We simply ask that your hair be worn down and kept consistent throughout your treatment course. Feel free to wear whatever makes you comfortable.

Yes, we accept Advance Care Card, which provides interest-free or low-interest monthly payment options. To learn more or apply, visit advancecarecard.com. Please note: our staff are not involved in the application process and are unable to assist with submissions.

Yes, most patients continue their current psychiatric medications during TMS treatment. Your provider will review your full treatment plan, including your goals for medication use during the Pre-Procedure evaluation. They’ll also assess your ongoing medication needs once TMS is complete. Regardless of your preferences, it’s important to continue taking medications as prescribed unless your provider advises otherwise.

While many patients benefit, TMS isn’t right for everyone. If you don’t see improvement, our providers will help explore other options and next steps in your care.
